Social Outreach Programs

In keeping with the goal of Calvert House, many outreach programs are offered to the students for their participation. While students may benefit in numerous ways from these programs, the level of social justice awareness gained is paramount.

Calvert House Tutoring

Calvert House will offer tutoring for 2nd to 12th grade students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays following school and on Saturdays in both the morning and afternoon.

If you would like to tutor or apply for tutoring, contact Katy Bologna.

Homeless Food Run

The Homeless Food Run will occur every other Thursday and will meet at the Lower Lounge of Calvert House at 5:30pm beginning in January. The dates are Jan. 31, Feb. 14, Feb. 28, and Mar. 13.

Please contact Kateri Somrak or join the Homeless Food Run listhost.

Mission Trips

Calvert House students helped rebuild homes in New Orleans this past Spring Break.

Please keep our team - Alicia Bushman, Kyle Lee, Donnie Bungum, Pamela Kaye, Caitrin Nicol, Carolyn Brostrom, Sylvia Spyrka and Peder Hinderlie - in your prayers as they process their experience.

The next mission experience is in the planning stages. If you'd like to participate or suggest a location, let us know! Any tax-deductible donations made toward the next trip should be made payable to and mailed directly to Calvert House.

Food Pantry

From collecting canned food in the Hyde Park community to unloading large deliveries, Calvert House students are deeply involved in the workings of local food pantries such as St. Columbanus at 71st and Calumet and St. James on Wabash.

St. Columbanus Food Pantry serves 1,200 families a month. Their population consists primarily of the working poor - families who hold one, two, even three jobs but still cannot feed their families. The infirmed, elderly and homebound are also served by this pantry.

In addition to providing physical labor, students help to raise the funding for the pantry (nearly $100,000 a year) through the Development Internship, which organizes direct mail appeals, fundraisers, and grant writing.

Communion and Visitation

Students from Calvert House will have the opportunity to work with St. Thomas the Apostle to bring communion and comfort to the residents of Kenwood Nursing Home and to the sick at the University of Chicago Hospitals on either Wednesday or Saturday depending on student interest.

Training is required, so please contact Fr. Patrick Rugen if interested.

Catholic Worker House

Catholic Worker Houses provide food and housing to the homeless in a way that respects the dignity of the human person. This fall, Calvert House students will begin helping at the nearest house through hands-on projects and fundraising.

Contact Cheryl Terrel if you would like to help.

Development Internship Program

Throughout the year students are given the opportunity to serve other non-profits in development, especially through grant writing. Guided by the Calvert House Director of Development, students research and write grant proposals.

Please contact Kathleen Dujsik for more information.
