Prayer & Reflection
Calvert House welcomes students and faculty at the University of Chicago to participate in educational
programs, faith sharing, and prayer. Some groups focus on an intellectual understanding of the Catholic
Church. Other groups focus on prayer, scripture, and implementing our faith in our everyday lives.
Whether you are looking to explore the Catholic tradition or deepen your life in Christ, there are groups
available to satisfy many needs.
Bible Study
Opportunities for Bible Study depend upon student interest and leadership. Please let us know if you
would like to participate in or lead one of the following or would like to form a new group.

Inquiry into the Catholic Faith and RCIA
Anyone interested in finding out more about the Roman Catholic tradition, or desiring the
Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation, should contact Fr. Patrick Rugen
about RCIA.
The first meeting for RCIA will be Wednesday, October 3rd, at 6:00pm.
For more information, please call 773-288-2311 or email
Father Rugen with any questions. Meanwhile, there are many resources about the Catholic
faith available on our Links page.
Sedes Sapientiae Adoration Chapel
The Sedes Sapientiae Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, in memory of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen,
Servant of God, is located in the lower level of Calvert House. This chapel was dedicated
and blessed on May 9, 2004, by Bishop Joseph Perry. The chapel is visited daily by students,
faculty, and staff. The unique monstrance was handcarved in Spain and is the only one of its
kind in the world. A photo of the monstrance is on the masthead of this website's homepage.
The Adoration Chapel is open from 8am to 8pm Monday through Friday.
Faith Sharing
Interested in more clearly understanding how God is present and active in your life?
Faith-sharing offers an opportunity to explore that activity. A group meets to read and
reflect on Scripture, and then discuss its impact on their lives.
Lectio Divina
This contemplative praying of the Scriptures enables the words of Scripture to help us
find the Word of God. Though lectio divina is often thought of as prayer for monks and
nuns, it is a way for everyone to enter into relationship with God. Occasional instruction
sessions can be offered.
Busy Student Retreat
Offered once in the Fall and again in the Winter Quarter, this asks for one hour a day from
Monday-Thursday, half in reading Scripture and half in meeting with your director. It
includes an evening discussion over pizza on vocational discernment for those who are
interested.
Student Led Retreats
This retreat gives students the opportunity to minister to their fellow students by
organizing and overseeing a retreat. If you are interested in participating in this
process, please let us know - planning should begin as soon as possible.
Twilight Retreat
Calvert House is offering a Twilight Retreat for the first time this fall. A Twilight
Retreat begins in the evening and concludes in the morning, allowing busy students to take
care of academic concerns while spending time taking care of their spiritual lives.
Spiritual Direction
God's voice may often be difficult to discern. Spiritual directors help students
understand and hear the active voice of God in their busy lives.
